Memorials

There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

Joe "Jose" Gouveia

May 11, 2014

Well-known Cape Cod poet Joe Gouveia, 49, of Hyannis, died at home early Saturday morning after a long battle with cancer.

The first-generation Portuguese-American had his poetry published in six countries on four continents. He hosted the radio show "Poet's Corner" on Provincetown's local radio station WOMR 92.1 FM, and wrote a column in the Barnstable Patriot. His book of poetry, "Saudades," was released last month.

Gouveia passionately wrote about his heritage, motorcycles and his family. His poetry and his wife, Josy, kept him strong while he was ill, according to his friends.

Lauren Wolk, associate director at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, last saw Gouveia at a Sandwich hospice in March. She said she was happy he lived to see "Saudades" published.

"Joe fought more gallantly, I believe, than anyone I've known," Wolk said. "He was working hard with his publishers to get this book out."

Mary Ellen Redmond, a friend and fellow poet, said Gouveia will leave a long-standing legacy in the poetry world. Redmond met Gouveia in the late 1990s, when she was new to performing poetry.

They hit it off, and he supported and coached her in the years that followed, she said.

"Joe did so much in regards to the poetry movement on the Cape," Redmond said. "He did it selflessly. It was never about him. He did it for poetry. He will be missed."

I just keep shaking my head in disbelief.  She was just wonderful, just wonderful.  It is odd for me to see her with long hair!  I am so sorry to hear this.  My sympathies for her family and friends.  Just terrible.  I'm so sorry.
